Atomic reconstruction induced by uniaxial stress in MnP

In condensed matter physics, pressure is frequently used to modify the stability of both electronic states and atomic arrangements. Under isotropic pressure, the intermetallic compound MnP has recently attracted attention for the interplay between pressure-induced superconductivity and complicated magnetic order in the vicinity. By contrast, we use uniaxial stress, a directional type of pressure, to investigate the effect on the magnetism and crystal structure of this compound. An irreversible magnetisation response induced by uniaxial stress is discovered in MnP at uniaxial stress as low as 0.04 GPa. Neutron diffraction experiments reveal that uniaxial stress forms crystal domains that satisfy pseudo-rotational symmetry unique to the MnP-type structure. The structure of the coexisting domains accounts for the stress-induced magnetism. We term this first discovered phenomenon atomic reconstruction (AR) induced by uniaxial stress. Furthermore, our calculation results provide guidelines on the search for AR candidates. AR allows crystal domain engineering to control anisotropic properties of materials, including dielectricity, elasticity, electrical conduction, magnetism and superconductivity. A wide-ranging exploration of potential AR candidates would ensure that crystal domain engineering yields unconventional methods to design functional multi-domain materials for a wide variety of purposes.

Experimental study on the localization and estimation of radioactivity in concrete rubble using image reconstruction algorithms

To reduce a large amount of contaminated concrete rubble stored in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station site, recycling low-radioactivity rubble within the site is a possible remedy. To promote recycling while ensuring safety, not only the average radioactivity but also the radioactivity distribution of concrete rubble should be efficiently evaluated because the details of rubble contamination caused by the accident remain unclear and likely include hotspots. However, evaluating inhomogeneous contamination of thick and/or dense materials is difficult using previous measurement systems, such as clearance monitors. This study experimentally confirmed the potential applicability of image reconstruction algorithms for radioactivity distribution evaluation in concrete rubble filled in a chamber. Radiation was measured using plastic scintillation fiber around the chamber (50 $$times$$ 50 $$times$$ 40 cm$$^{3}$$). Localized hotspots were simulated using standard sources of $$^{137}$$Cs, which is one of the main nuclides of contaminated rubble. The radioactivity distribution was calculated for 100 or 50 voxels (voxel size: (10 cm)$$^{3}$$ or 10 $$times$$ 10 $$times$$ 20 cm$$^{3}$$) constituting the chamber. For 100 voxels, inner hotspots were undetected, whereas, for 50 voxels, both inner and surface hotspots were reconstructible. The distribution evaluated using the maximum likelihood expectation maximization algorithm was the most accurate; the average radioactivity was estimated within 70% accuracy in all seven cases.

Proposal of simulation material test technique for clarifying the structure failure mechanisms under excessive seismic loads

It is very essential to clarify the structure failure mechanisms under excessive seismic loads. However, structural tests using actual structural materials are very difficult and expensive. Therefore, we have proposed the structure test approach using lead alloys in order to simulate the structure failure mechanisms under the excessive seismic loads. In this study, we conducted material tests using lead alloy and verified the effectiveness of the simulated material tests. Moreover, we formulated inelastic constitutive equations (best fit fatigue curve equation and cyclic stress range - strain range relationship equation) of lead alloy based on the results of a series of material tests. Nonlinear numerical analyses, e.g. finite element analyses, can be performed using the proposed equations. A series of simulation material test technique enables structural tests and analyses using lead alloy to simulate the structure failure phenomena under excessive seismic loads.

Impact of non-linear elastic behavior on bentonite density evolution at the FEBEX

It is necessary to apply reliable numerical simulation techniques to assess the mechanical behaviour of repositories for the geological disposal of radioactive waste over a long period of time. Having a constitutive model that can describe the mechanical behaviour of bentonite is key to such numerical simulations. In this study, the applicability of linear elastic constitutive model with swelling term is examined focusing on the density heterogeneity by applying to the in situ Full-scale Engineered Barrier Experiment (FEBEX) in Grimsel. It was confirmed that this constitutive model underestimates the density change. Instead, mechanical behaviour was re-simulated by unsaturated elasto-plastic constitutive model using the changes in degree of saturation as input data. Although no feedback effects of mechanical behaviour on hydraulic and thermal behaviour were taken into account, two-dimensional stress and density could be reproduced.

Although it is very essential to clarify how the structure collapses under the severe accident conditions, the failure mechanisms in excessive high temperatures are not clarified. However, it is very difficult and expensive to perform structural tests using actual structural materials. Therefore, we propose to use lead alloys instead of actual structural materials. For demonstration of analogy between the failure mechanisms of lead alloys structure at low temperature and those of the actual structures at high temperature, numerical analyses are required. Although the authors proposed inelastic constitutive equations for numerical analyses in 2019, the equations could not successfully express because of large variations observed in the material tests of the lead alloy. In this study, we propose the improved inelastic constitutive equations of the lead alloy on the basis of the material test results used by aged alloy which can stabilized the material characteristic.

A Study on applicability of elasto-plastic constitutive model to mechanical behavior of buffer material in salt water conditions

In this study, an applicability of the modified Cam clay model to the buffer material under saltwater conditions was examined. First, consolidated-undrained triaxial test was conducted using NaCl solution and artificial seawater. Based on the consolidated-undrained triaxial compression test results and the existing consolidation test results, the difference in the mechanical behavior of the buffer material under distilled water and saltwater condition was clarified. In particular, there was a difference in the unloading behavior in the consolidation test. Through reproducibility analysis of these experimental data, it was confirmed that the mechanical behavior of the buffer material can be roughly reproduced by setting the swelling index according to the salt concentration.

A Proposal of inelastic constitutive equations of lead alloys used for structural tests simulating severe accident conditions

Under the severe accident conditions, structural materials of nuclear power plants are subjected to excessive high temperature. Although it is very essential to clarify how the structure collapses under the severe accident conditions, the failure mechanisms in such high temperatures are not clarified. However, it is very difficult and expensive to perform structural tests using actual structural materials. Therefore, we propose to use lead alloys instead of actual structural materials. Because the strength of lead alloys is much poorer than that of the actual structural materials, failure can be observed at low temperature and by small load. For demonstration of analogy between the failure mechanisms of lead alloys structure at low temperature and those of the actual structures at high temperature, numerical analyses are required. So, we confirm the material characteristics of lead alloys and develop inelastic constitutive equations of lead alloy required for finite element analyses.

Bentonite has remarkable swelling characteristics and low permeability that makes it a suitable buffer material in a purpose built repository for the geological disposal of radioactive waste. It is necessary to use reliable numerical simulation techniques to demonstrate that the repository is safe and mechanically stable for tens of thousands of years. Constitutive model that describes the mechanical behavior of bentonite is a key technique in such numerical simulations. The current paper proposes a constitutive model for bentonite, which treats bentonite as an unsaturated elasto-plastic material that changes its mechanical properties as it becomes saturated. In the proposed model, the swelling index and an expression formula for negative dilatancy are treated as functions of degree-of-saturation. Montmorillonite content is used as an input parameter in the proposed model and so is applicable to a variety of bentonite based materials of varying montmorillonite content. Experimental results from swelling volume and swelling pressure tests taken from the literature are shown to be satisfactorily predicted by the proposed model.

The Compton camera was improved for use with the unmanned helicopter. Increase of the scintillator array from 4$$times$$4 to 8$$times$$8 and expanse of the distance between the two layers contributed to the improvements of detection efficiency and angular resolution, respectively. Measurements were performed over the riverbed of the Ukedo river of Namie town in Fukushima Prefecture. By programming of flight path and speed, the areas of 65 m $$times$$ 60 m and 65 m $$times$$ 180 m were measured during about 20 and 30 minutes, respectively. By the analysis the air dose rate maps at 1 m height were obtained precisely with the angular resolution corresponding to the position resolution of about 10 m from 10 m height. Hovering flights were executed over the hot spot areas for 10-20 minutes at 5-20 m height. By using the reconstruction software the $$gamma$$-ray images including the hot spots were obtained with the angular resolution same as that evaluated in the laboratory (about 10$$^{circ}$$).

On the radioactive waste disposal, the long-term mechanical stability of shafts and galleries excavated in rock is required. Therefore, it is very important to understand the time-dependent behavior of rock mass for evaluating long-term mechanical stability. The purpose of this study is determining the mechanisms of time-dependent behavior of rock mass by precise testing, observation and measurement in order to develop methods for evaluating long-term mechanical stability of a rock mass. This report describes the results of the activities in fiscal year 2013. In Chapter 1, we described the overview and background of this study. In Chapter 2, the results of a long-term creep test on Tage tuff, started in fiscal year 1997 are described. In Chapter 3, the result of organization and analysis for time-dependent behavior of crystalline rock was described. In Chapter 4, for the drafting of in-situ test plan, examination of the numerical analysis technique of rock mass was carried out.

Plastic deformation behavior of type 316LN stainless steel in non-irradiated, thermallysensitized condition or in irradiated condition during SSRT

Plastic deformation behavior to influence the stress corrosion cracking was studied for the thermally-sensitized and the irradiated type 316LN stainless steel. SSRT was conducted at 573 K in oxygenated water (DO=10ppm) for specimens. Each of the specimens was thermally sensitized at 1033 K for 100 h or irradiated at 473 K to 1 dpa. Between these specimens, the plastic deformation behavior and the IGSCC were compared. For the irradiated specimens, plastic deformation behavior such as the work hardening capability and the maximum stress where IASCC initiated was similar to that of thermally-sensitized specimens in true stress-true strain relation. Moreover, the effect of strain rate on %IGSCC was the same each other. It was suggested from these results that for specimens irradiated around 1 dpa, the initiation mechanism of IASCC was similar to that of IGSCC for thermally-sensitized specimens.

The $$alpha$$, $$beta$$ and $$gamma$$ phases of the GaAs(001)-2$$times$$4 surface have been investigated by ${it in situ}$ surface X-ray diffraction in an As flux and at temperatures ranging from 480$$^circ$$C to 610$$^circ$$C. It has been found that the fractional-order peaks originating from the fourfold symmetry show shift in the [110] direction as well as significant broadening of the peaks in the $$alpha$$ and $$gamma$$ phases. The direction of the peak shift is characteristic in each phase. This behavior is explained by the formation of the antiphase domain boundaries. The atomic structure of the domain boundaries is discussed.

In order to document a basic manual about input data, output data, execution of computer code on groundwater flow and radionuclide transport calculation in heterogeneous porous rock, we investigated the theoretical background about geostastical computer codes and the user's manual for the computer code on groundwater flow and radionuclide transport which calculates water flow in three dimension, the path of moving radionuclide, and one dimensional radionuclide migration. In this report, based on above investigation we describe the geostastical background about simulating heterogeneous permeability field. And we describe construction of files, input and output data, a example of calculating of the programs which simulates heterogeneous permeability field, and calculates groundwater flow and radionuclide transport. Therefore, we can document a manual by investigating the theoretical background about geostastical computer codes and the user's manual for the computer code on groundwater flow and radionuclide transport calculation. And we can model heterogeneous porous rock and analyze groundwater flow and radionuclide transport by utilizing the information from this report.
